Chapter 11
Jack
I felt like shit. Like hot shit frying under the summer sun on the sidewalk. When I wasnât freezing to death, I felt like I was standing on the surface of the sun. Everything hurts. My head felt like it was stuffed full of cotton so I couldnât breathe, and I was fairly certain Iâd hacked up at least one if not both my lungs.
Yeah, I was sick, but I had no time to be sick. Flora had gotten over her cold and was her usual whirly dervish self. She hadnât stopped for a single minute today and had refused to go down for a nap. Much to my dismay. Iâd been banking on that nap to chill her out and recoup some of my energy for Holliâs arrival. Because I refused to cancel time with my boy. Fuck, it was so nice to call him that and it be true.
Our shopping trip had been everything Iâd ever wanted. Being able to spoil Holli and take his burdens off his shoulders made me giddy. He was already gorgeous, but there was this new glow about him once heâd fully relaxed. When Iâd led us to the toy store, Holli had been worse than me wanting to buy everything for Flora. Which is why there were now a dozen Care Bears mixed in with all the Groguâs.
Flora gave out a delighted screech from a place on the floor lying with Missy, and my head felt like it was cleaved in two. I buried my face into the couch cushion where I was wallowing in misery and groaned. Damn it. How was I going to get through the day and give Holli all the attention he deserved? Iâd taken Tylenol, but it hadnât put a dent in my discomfort. I was hesitant to take any medicine since that stuff had a tendency to knock my ass out.
Come on, Jackie Boy. You command boardrooms and manage a ridiculous number of huge properties. Youâve been in some tough situations before. A little cold shouldnât have you down for the count. With a heavy grunt, I forced myself up into a sitting position. The world spun, and I had to pull deep breaths in through my nose to keep a wave of nausea at bay. This was way worse than having to face down a room full of money-grubbing board members.
I got my roiling stomach under control just as my doorbell chimed. Holli was here. Using all my strength, I heaved myself off the couch, but ended up falling back onto the cushion as another bout of dizziness hit me. My head lolled to the side and huge black spots danced in my vision. Shit, I was a mess, but I needed to get the door. I needed to take care of my boy and my baby.
âJack? Jack? Holy shâ¦crap. Jack.â Holliâs concerned voice reached my ears, and I tried again to get off the couch. âWhoa, there, cowboy. No moving for you.â Gentle pressure was applied to my shoulders, and I sank back into the cushion.
